tanlines-highlights-560x560Brooklyn-based duo Tanlines return with their sophomore LP, Highlights, three years after the successful Mixed Emotions. Like their previous efforts, Highlights showcases the group’s musical talent and songwriting abilities. While certain songs continue the tropical-influenced, synth-driven sound that listeners expect (as in “Pieces”, “Palace”, and “Two Thousand Miles”), the duo also makes use of guitar and drums in some more straightforward, rock-oriented moments on the record (“Invisible Ways”, “Bad Situations”).

Despite the cool, calm, soulful and often-melancholic vocals on the album, Highlights provides plenty of bright and accessible pop tunes ideal for the summertime listener. In a record with many musical highlights (no pun intended), tracks “Pieces”, “Slipping Away”, and “If You Stay” are prime examples of Tanlines’ ability to craft songs driven by thoughtful lyrics and sparkling musical production. Highlights is another strong, cohesive piece of work from a supremely talented duo that should leave many listeners eagerly awaiting the group’s next move.
