Phases is Los Angeles-based Cellars’s second album, with front woman/songwriter Allene Norton and production by better-known Ariel Pink. This fun-times album is deliberately open about its heavy ’80s synthpop nostalgia. You can hear all of your fave synthetic, bubbly and shimmery sounds à la Duran Duran, Giorgio Moroder, Soft Cell and a more cheerful Siouxsie & the Banshees. Ariel Pink’s production is flawless.
Some tunes are made for dancing, others are made for *feeling.* The feeling tracks would be “Nighttime Girl,” “Still in Love,” and “Stircrazy.” Of greater interest to this reviewer are the danceable tracks: “Do You Miss Me?,” “I’m Feeling,” and “Nervous.” There is something that will feel right for just about anyone in this album.
Recommended If You Like: Neon Indian, Tame Impala, Duran Duran, O.M.D.
Recommended Tracks: 2 (Do You Miss Me?), 7 (I’m Feeling), 9 (Nervous)
