The Jayhawks cross country team competed in their second home meet of the year at Rim Rock Farm on Saturday morning. In two highly competitive races, the Kansas men and women’s cross country teams took 2nd and 3rd in their respective races. The highly regarded cross country program from Indiana swept the men’s and women’s races.
On the women’s side, Indiana claimed 1st place with a total of 36 points, and Rice narrowly defeated the Jayhawks 45 to 46 for 2nd place. Sophomore Sharon Lokedi ran up front for the Jayhawks, finishing in 4th place with a time of 20:37.7. The pack behind Lokedi was led by seniors, Malika Baker (21:20.1) in seventh, Nashia Baker (21:40.3) in 10th, Hannah Richardson (21:46.7) in 12th, and Hannah Dimmick (21:48.7) in 13th.
Other women finishers for the Jayhawks included senior Jennifer Angles (21:57.5) in 15th, sophomore Riley Cooney (22:04.4) in 19th, and junior Lydia Saggau (22:17.8) in 24th.
On the men’s side, Indiana finished 1st with 23 points, Kansas came in second with 42 points, and Rice rounded out the top three with 98 points. Junior Chris Melgares led the Jayhawks with a sixth place overall finish. Melgares finished his home 8k course in a time of 24:19.0. Following behind Melgares was sophomore Dylan Hodgson (24:33.5) in ninth, senior Daniel Koech (24:37.0) in 11th, sophomore Michael Melgares (24:39.3) in 12th, and senior James Hampton ( 24:42.3) in 13th to round out the top 5 for Kansas.
Other finishers for the men’s team included junior Ben Burchstead (25:06.8) in 18th, senior Jacob Ryan (25:14.6) in 19th, freshman Avery Hale (25:30.7) in 23rd, and junior Carson Vickroy (25:29.9) in 25th place.
Both the men and women will look to build on this performance as they get set for Pre-Nationals in Terre Haute, Indiana on October 15th.
