In honor of KJHK’s Spring Fundraiser Concert on January 23rd, Live Events Director Gus Ketchell sat down with performing band “Mosaic” to interview them. If you would rather watch the interview, check out the video on our Instagram!

Gus: Hi I’m Gus I’m the Live Events Director here at KJHK and we’re here with Mosaic who’s one of the bands for our upcoming Fundraiser show on January 23rd.

Max: My name is Max, I play the keys.

Jaron: My name’s Jaron, I play the drums.

Micah: My name’s Micah, I play the bass.

Gus: Alright, could you guys tell us how Mosaic got started up as a band, how long you’ve been making music and sort of how it all came together?

Micah: Well it’s gone in phases, the first time what would come to be the band played together was actually about a year ago. It was in early January, and it was me and my friend Lucas and our friend Andrew, and it was us kinda just jamming in my apartment. Me and Lucas were both on guitar, we were rocking out, and at that point we went by the name “Folk Music Soundbook” or something? From the Folk Music Soundbook that was on the table in the apartment that I lived in. Eventually I was like, “yo I got this drummer, Jaron, he’s phenomenal” and we played with him, then Maxwell came along, he hopped in on a session. And we became “Set the MCL”, which was kinda like a fusion jam group, and then we sealed the deal with our newest inclusion, Lauren, who’s the singer. And now we’re “Mosaic”.

Jaron: Yeah, that’s about the story.

Gus: Alright, next question is what is your favorite show you’ve performed as Mosaic?

Max: Well, I had a really good time playing The Bottleneck back in December. I think that was the 5th? That was a really fun one.

Jaron: One of the shows that I’m most fond of was our first show as “Mosaic”. It was a Replay gig, and there weren’t that many people there. But like, the energy was just so fun because it was just so new. I don’t know, it breathed a lot of life into our music, and I enjoyed it so much.

Micah: Mine was probably, [when] KJHK hosted a spooky showcase event. That one was really fun, we all dressed up, I was beer, it was a great time.

Gus: One final question; why should people support KJHK by coming to this fundraiser show?

Jaron: Because you’re supporting local musicians like us, of course.

Micah: Yeah and any sort of scene, whether that be arts or music or sports, you need some tastemakers and you need some coverage to show people what’s happening in the scene. And KJ[HK] is that for Lawrence, and it’s really helpful for all things art.

Jaron: And you’re also supporting KJHK, which is a wonderful station in and of itself, and it stands for a lot of beautiful things.

Max: KJHK really just helps keep independent, alternative music alive in the local area, it really helps just support a lot of local musicians as well as smaller musicians around the country and gives them a voice so, it’s just a really great organization to support.
