KJHK’s Songs of the Summer

By Content Director Cameron Castaldi

As grad season quickly comes to a close, it’s time to kick off the summer festivities! What better way to do that than by listening to a playlist curated by some of KJHK’s summer DJs? Since pop music and stan Twitter have decided that we still don’t have a song of the summer, we decided to take matters into our own hands and curate a list of our own.

  • “She Moves On” by Paul Simon

“I think those drums are gonna be the sound of the summer.” – DJ Sullivan

  • “Children of the Drum – 1977 Predecessor Mix” by Theo Parrish, Yamini Nayar & Jerry the Cat

“I think house music will be on the rise this summer. If you listen to the drums on this track, they are quite similar to that Paul Simon song. I think it’s just a real good summer kickback song.” – DJ Sullivan

  • “A Sea of Love” by Huerco S.

“This is my favorite song right now. It was produced by a guy from Kansas City. The ambience sounds and feels like Kansas. Kansas just kind of has this special energy, and I think Huerco did a really good job capturing the essence of Kansas City/Lawrence in this album.” – DJ Sullivan

  • “Next of Kin” by Alvvays

“Ultimate pop rock, W vocals, W guitar summer vibe, W drums. Ain’t this fire?” – DJ CC

  • “Everywhere” by Common (feat. Martina Topley-Bird)

“This song sounds like driving 15 miles over the speed limit on a cool summer night. The chorus is just the phrase ‘everywhere is summer’ repeated a million times, just in case you forget what season it is.” – DJ Nyx

  • “Carnival” by The Cardigans

“The Cardigans always have the cutest, summeriest songs. The summeriest song of theirs I could find is about falling in love at a carnival, which I think is VERY fitting. And the dream. I wish that were me fr.” – DJ Nyx

  • “Blow” by Kesha

“Feeling uneasy with the fear of an upcoming recession? Just start the party early with our favorite childhood hit!” – DJ Gator

  • “Seventeen” by Sharon Van Etten

“Haven’t heard of this song? Well stop being lazy and listen to it! It might not be YOUR song of the summer, but the LGBTQ Yellowjackets fans who hyperfixate on the soundtrack are HERE for Sharon this summer!” – DJ Gator

  • “Stars” by PinkPantheress

“It’s got a nice synth intro and when the beat kicks in it feels like a 2000s British club track, which is a really cool vibe.” – DJ Kwiktee

  • “Forget Her” by Jeff Buckley

“It’s a non-yearning summer. We’re letting go (by yearning).” – DJ Raibread

  • “Sunshine & Rain…” by Kali Uchis DJ T-Rex
  • “Sugar Water Cyanide” by Rebecca Black DJ T-Rex
  • “One Wish” by Ravyn Lenae (feat. Childish Gambino) DJ Marmalade
  • “HEATSTROKE” by DeZi – DJ B. Fly
  • “LDN” by Lily Allen – DJ Lavender Prescription
  • “REEL IT IN” by Aminé – DJ Downtown Black & Brown
  • “Bidi Bidi Bom Bom” by Selena – DJ Twagz
