The beginning of the semester is bringing plenty of exciting opportunities not only for us at KJHK but also all around campus. Between classes starting, the first football game of the season, and freshmen orientation, the first few weeks of the year provide excellent chances for getting involved. While you work to navigate the start of the semester, here is a review of everything that went on here at KJHK over the summer!
Our Summer DJs kept the good tunes going all season long, with some amazing special programs, including Queer Talk, Haskell Hour, Femme FM, and Alternative Flashback, as well as our daily shows, such as Breakfast for Beatlovers and Jazz in the Morning. Keep an eye out for our Fall programming schedule coming soon to see what other shows you can catch this season!
In June, KJHK brought Alt-R&B band Keo & Them to Lawrence’s Juneteenth Celebration in Downtown Lawrence. Their incredible performance took place at South Park, along with various other acts, to celebrate the holiday. For Pride month, we walked in the Lawrence Pride Parade on Massachusetts St. Despite being completely soaked from the torrential downpour, a little rain did not stop us from handing out KJHK stickers and merch while walking by the drenched parade attendees.
In July, we hosted our Alumni Freeform, where KJHK alumni got to come back to the station to take over the broadcast and DJ. Throughout the summer, our amazing Content Director, Cameron Castaldi, kept the website fresh with some great articles that are worth checking out! We also started our Food Drive with Just Food, which we are still taking donations for at the station.
Summer concluded with KU’s annual Union Fest, which had an amazing turnout–we had over 200 people sign up for volunteer staff or to DJ! We can’t wait to see you all at the station throughout the year!
Keep an eye out for our upcoming events, such as our Fall Fundraiser Concert on August 28th at the Replay Lounge, our Thrift Fundraiser on September 10th in the Student Union, and our 50th Birthday celebration coming in October. This year has some incredibly exciting opportunities and events, and we can’t wait to keep it locked with you all this semester!
