After another loss to the Baylor Bears last Saturday, the Jayhawks will try to redeem themselves this Saturday in their antepenultimate game against the Texas Longhorns. The team will travel to Austin, Texas to play the Longhorns at 5 p.m.
The last time Texas and Kansas faced off was on Nov. 19 of last year, where the Jayhawks miraculously beat Texas in overtime 24-21.
The Jayhawks lost last week to Baylor 38-9, allowing Baylor their first win of the season.
Sophomore quarterback Carter Stanley—who in the Sunflower Showdown on Oct. 28 finished the game with over 400 yards and a touchdown—threw for just 155 yards and an interception against the Bears. Likewise, junior wide receiver Steven Sims Jr. caught 7 passes for 42 yards, much lower than the Kansas State game, where he caught 9 passes for 233 yards and a score.
Last Saturday, the Longhorns played Texas Christian University and lost 24-7. Sophomore quarterback Shane Buechele threw for 254 yards and one touchdown.
In conference play, Texas is 3-3. They are looking to redeem themselves this Saturday against the 1-8 Jayhawks.
If Texas wants to come back on their loss from last week, they need to focus on their already strong defense and improving their offensive line. Buechele was sacked 7 times and struggled to deliver strong passes to his wide receivers against TCU.
Additionally, Kansas’ offense has been looking dreary to say the least. Improvement is needed in all aspects, after running back Khalil Herbert only amassed 10 carries with 71 rushing yards against Baylor. Stanley is expected to start this Saturday, and can hopefully improve his game from last week.
The Jayhawks will be motivated to beat Texas for the second year in a row. And Texas, after losing at Memorial Stadium last year, will be motivated to avenge that loss. This game is likely to be a charged and close game.
