An ‘African’ Sound
It’d be insulting to even try and define it. Hosting Radio Afrika gives me the opportunity to showcase some of my favorite music of African origin, influence, or by African artists. Sometimes however after listening to my show, many people are often confused as to how some of the songs I choose to play are “African” in any sense. Maybe it’s my fault for not elaborating on every song I choose to play, but I think another part of the issue is that Africa- being a continent composed of 56 countries and speaking over 2000 languages- is way more diverse than we tend to give credit for, especially when considering it’s diaspora communities. An increasingly experimental music scene from artists both in and outside of the continent has been pushing the boundaries of the already diverse sound of ‘African’ music. And here are just a few of those artists..
