Ringing in a new semester and a fresh start for the KJHK charts is local artist Josh Berwanger! Released simply as Berwanger, the EP Demonios has taken our number one spot with ease and grace. This release is a mix of country and guitar centered rock, and is another in a long line of eclectic and beautiful-as-all-get-out releases from KC label High Dive Records.
Following up Demonios is an album familiar to our charts, Neon Indian’s Vega Intl. Night School. There’s not much else to be said by us here at KJHK about this album other than please, for the love of all that is (and isn’t…) holy, give this is a listen. This third release from Alan Palomo, the mind behind Neon Indian, is a mix of chillwave, disco, house, psychedelic, and just about any electronic sub-genre you can think of intermingled with perfectly placed samples and trippy vocals.
Number three on our chart this week is Paper Mache Dream Balloon, from King Gizzard and The Lizard Wizard. A beautiful album, it leaves behind the conceptions listeners had of these garage fuzz rockers to create a beautiful acoustic landscape, complimented with flute and styles new to the King Gizzard and The Lizard Wizard sound. Next up at number four, KJHK favorite Alex G with the expectedly familiar but enjoyable Beach Music. And lastly, rounding out our top 5 is another album that’s done quite well on our charts: Wand’s 1000 Days, described by KJHK staffer Caroline Roe as “sludgy, wizard-y, gloomy, fuzzy garage rock.”
With a new semester comes a new rotation! We have some lingering albums from 2015, but those are massively overshadowed by the plethora of new albums kicking off our first week back on the charts.
New to the chart this week: Berwanger with Demonios, Connan Mockasin and Devonté Hynes with Myths 001, Ty Segall with Ty Rex, Besnard Lakes with A Coliseum Complex Museum, Aidan Knight with Each Other, The Conquerors with You Must Be Dreaming B/W Maybe Someday, Cristobal and The Sea with Sugar Now, Pusha T with King Push – Darkest Before Dawn: The Prelude, Chet Faker and Marcus Marr with Work, and Useless Eaters with Live In San Francisco.
