Number one this week is Untitled Unmastered., the surprise release from the devastatingly talented hip-hop artist Kendrick Lamar. This eight track album is a collection of unreleased material from the past two years, much of it created during the time that the masterful funk and soul imbued social commentary of To Pimp A Butterfly was being written and produced. In places, Untitled Unmastered is akin to To Pimp A Butterfly, but there are breakaway moments as well. In particular, “Untitled 7 2014-2016.” This latter half of this eight minute track is a loose, laughing Kendrick freestyling and chatting with unknown voices over plucked acoustic guitar.
Following up Kendrick are releases from Animal Collective, Wild Nothing, Adrian Younge, and Eerie Wanda. Painting With has seen weeks of top 5 action here at KJHK, while Life Of Pause, Something About April II, and Hum are all new to the top 5!
