Jayhawks defeat FHSU with strong second half

The Kansas Jayhawks faced the Fort Hays State Tigers in their second exhibition game, and similarly to the game against Pitt State, KU was able to dominate their opponent as the ‘Hawks won 86-57.

Looking at the box score, the Jayhawks appear to have won with ease; however, the score was 38-33 at halftime. KU played sloppy basketball, as they were late to loose balls and their defense was shaky at best. After halftime, Bill Self must have given one of the greatest halftime speeches of all time, as the ‘Hawks outscored the Tigers 48-24 in the second half.

Overall throughout the game, the Jayhawks couldn’t buy a single bucket outside the 3-point line, as the team shot only 29%. Other than that, the only other real issue was the 14 turnovers, which led to 17 points for the Tigers. KU shot 52% from the field overall and 68% from the free throw line

The highlight of the game was definitely the senior Devonte’ Graham. Graham scored 27 points on 8-12 shooting (6-10 from behind the arc), and racked up 8 assists as well. Jayhawks were desperately looking for Graham to go off last game, but he was unable to deliver; however, Graham did not disappoint this game as he clearly looked the most ready for regular season. Some other that did decent as well are Billy Preston, who had 11 points off the bench, Udoka Azubuike, who had 15 points and grabbed 9 rebounds, and LeGerald Vick, who scored 12 points.

With this win, the Jayhawks improve to 86-9 in exhibition games, 52-4 under Bill Self, and 11-0 against Fort Hays Tigers.

In the next game, the Jayhawks will be officially kicking off their season against the Tennessee State Tigers, hoping to start the year off with a win. The game will be at Allen Fieldhouse on Friday N0vember, 10th at 8:00 PM.
