Bon Bon is the restaurant lovechild of the couple who opened Lawrence’s beloved Burger Stand. Located deep within East Lawrence, Bon Bon’s whole vibe is quirky and creative, both aesthetically and taste-wise. The menu has a lot of variety, the atmosphere is cool and interesting, and the restaurant setup itself is unconventional. The kitchen is located on a stationary food truck that’s right outside the restaurant. All of the food is cooked there and delivered to the building a few feet away. Also right outside is “Bon Bon Gardens,” which suggests that some of the produce is grown just a few feet from where you’ll be eating it, which is appealing to those farm-to-table fans.
The food is categorized into “Snacks,” “Bunz” and “Bowls.” For snacks, you can get anything from wings to spicy tofu chili, surprisingly sweet queso, or savory brussel sprouts. The rest of the menu spans from octopus to pork loin to duck. Something that I really appreciated was a key at the bottom of the menu, that shows which menu items are vegan, vegetarian, gluten free, dairy free and spicy.
I had the “Taco Salad—mixed greens, chimichurri ranch, queso, avocado, winter squash, black beans, crispy tortilla, pickled onions and pepitas.” It was refreshing and had a nice variety of flavors and textures. The ingredients were fresh—the type of food that leaves you feeling good about what you just put into your body
I also had “The Charlotte,” a non-alcoholic drink made with earl grey tea, lavender syrup, and mint leaves. It also was incredibly refreshing and interesting. They have a full bar and a variety of unique cocktails that change often.
My brother enjoyed the special that evening, “Falafel—golden beet slaw, baba ganoush, cauliflower, carrot & beet purées.” He had great things to say about it, and I enjoyed dipping the sauces in the crispy tortilla that came with my meal.
The outside patio has plenty of seating, a great place to enjoy drinks with your friends, and multiple fire pits that make it accessible most of the year. It’ll be a really fun place to enjoy beers outside with your friends on nights when the Kansas weather is good to us. Go to this restaurant if you want to try something new and different that’s also healthy and will leave you feeling nourished and full. Bon Bon is located at 806 Pennsylvania St, Lawrence, KS 66044. It is open from 7 a.m. to “late.”
