Speedy Ortiz continue to develop their 90’s tinged noise-pop sound in their new album Foil Deer. Expect more noisy, quirky guitar riffs and a continued trend of fantastic lyrics from singer Sadie Dupuis (which makes sense considering that she holds a masters degree in poetry).
Fans of Speedy Ortiz’s previous work will likely find this entertaining though perhaps mildly disappointing. Don’t get me wrong: I think this album is great but while there are really good tracks on this album, I find myself missing the powerful and catchy tracks like Tiger Tank and No Below off their 2013 debut LP.My pickiness aside, Foil Deer still has plenty to offer and definitely deserves a spin.
The majority of the songs on this album are driving, such as the single Raising the Skate (2) and my favorite track, Ginger (10). There are also slower and more somber tracks like the poignant Mister Difficult (11) and My Dead Girl (9).
Bottom line, Foil Deer is a pretty cool album from a pretty cool band. Check it out.
