My Morning Jacket has been a band for years. I mean this is their 7th album. They’re known from their folk inspired American Dad-esque rock. You show me a Dad who doesn’t love Jim James! There is nothing wrong with their jangly upbeat Creedence vibe. It’s all good. At times it’s even down right inspiring. James has a gorgeous range and knack for writing positive and sentimental lyrics. The lyrics on The Waterfall are not quite as positive as other James works. While the single “Big Decisions “is gritty and upbeat other parts of the album are haunting. For instance “Like a River” is eerie and enchanting. The vocal harmonies and guitar work are chilling. “In Its Infancy (The Waterfall)” is the cornerstone of the album even without considering it is the title track. It is an ambitious track with expansive movements and gripping moments. Unexpected things happen in the track which makes the listen that much more rewarding. “Get the Point” features vulnerable honest lyrics with an alt country vibe. “Only Memories Remain” grabs the listener with melancholy lyrics and a groovy minimalistic beat. “Thin Line” boasts harmonies a la Fleet Foxes and swaying layers of guitars. My Morning Jacket produced an album that sticks to their signature sound but topped it with a fresh layer. No doubt these dudes with stick to what they know and continue to be good at it.
