Ad Astra Radio: Girls Rock Lawrence

Girls Rock Lawrence is a new summer day camp taking place this upcoming summer in Lawrence for girls in grades 7-12, dedicated to coming together for a week and making music together. Campers will come together to form bands for the week, and will attend multiple music-making workshops each day and will also receive time to practice with their bands. Workshop topics include band promotion, feminism, self-expression and many others.

Girls Rock Lawrence is a part of the Girls Rock Camp Alliance, which you can learn more about at girlsrockcampalliance.org. Girls Rock Lawrence aligns their values with the core values of the Girls Rock Camp Alliance, which includes valuing the power of music, integrity, honest and diversity. These and the rest of the core values can be found at either organization’s website.

On Friday, November 14, the Girls Rock Lawrence group put on a benefit show to help raise funds for the new camp, titled “Dang Girl”. KJHK News’ Max Van Dyke was able to speak with Monica George and Kelly Nightengale, two members of the board for Girls Rock Lawrence, about the new camp and program.
