The recent collaboration between Ryan Hemsworth and Lucas has unfolded into a melodic work of hard hitting tracks for their Taking Flight EP. The pair have a unique style to their sound with textured layers of free flowing vocals combined with the fissure of sputtered synths drifting throughout this project like a cool breeze.
The progression and build up in each track create a dynamic, recognizable sound that feels very “Ryan Hemsworth,” but with the the collaborative efforts of Seattle producer Lucas the team has put a new spin on this style.
Keeping his trap influence present in tracks like “From Grace,” Hemsworth rhythmically pulls you in and builds you up with every sound added leading to its resolution. All of the songs on Taking Flight have brief moments of drum and bass that peak through until falling back into a haze of the environmental sounds that Lucas is so drawn to. Hemsworth and Lucas strategically added the flares of found sounds to create a dimension of the beat that is unexpected but that ties the floating pieces of the mix together.
Taking Flight is a definite must listen. With just over 20 minutes this EP, it is a vital experiment that showcases the up and coming Lucas. The combination of both of these artists’ talents meld together seamlessly but also allow Lucas to bring his talents into focus.
