YancityGurl’s first album seems to be a very Russian release. Dropped on Opal Tapes, the eight track album rides the fine line between experimental, techno, and industrial, an album that seems to match English record label Opal Tapes’ modus operandi. Shadow Medium is a dark, mysterious journey through what might only be described as an interzone between war, peace, and heavy industry. The album starts off with a skippy, squelchy track called “Overlap” that probably belongs at a 90s rave, but is entirely welcome in 2016. “Denial” showcases the Kazan, Russia native’s interest in ambient, crafting a heavy techno track that has plenty of empty space to develop its sound. “Tender Pink” is the standout track off Shadow Medium with deep bass kicks that would knock the concrete off a missile silo’s walls. Put another way, imagine if Andrei Tarkovsky’s Stalker (1979) was less religious and more secular.
